Dave Stockton and Spain's Jose Maria Canizares shot 5-under-par 67s on Friday to share the first-round lead in the Senior PGA Tour's First of America Classic.
Dana Quigley, Bruce Summerhays and George Archer were a stroke back at 68, and Tom Shaw and Mike McCullough shot 69s.Summerhays said he took advantage of a lesson from Stockton last week during the Coldwell Banker Burnet Classic at Coon Rapids, Minn.
"My left heel was coming way up off the ground when I hit my driver and Dave asked me if he could give me some advice," Summerhays said. "He told me what was happening and on my next shot that problem was taken care of.
"He wants to beat you at your best. A guy who is willing to help should be at the top of the leader board. Good guys do win occasionally."
WOMEN'S BRITISH OPEN: At Lytham St. Annes, England, Brandie Burton shot a 2-over 74 today and leads halfway through the windswept Women's British Open, where not one player is even at par.
Burton, winner of the Du Maurier Classic two weeks ago, enters Saturday's third round at 1-over 145, with fellow American Leslie Spalding a shot behind.
Se Ri Pak, winner of two majors and two more tournaments in her rookie season, is seven strokes off the lead following a 74.
U.S. WOMEN'S AMATEUR: Jenny Chuasiriporn, the U.S. Women's Open runner-up, rolled past two opponents in match play Friday to advance to Saturday's semifinals at Barton Hills Country Club.
She'll play Brandi Miller of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., with the winner advancing to Sunday's 36-hole championship match. The other semifinal matches Marcy Newton of High Point, N.C. against Grace Park of Phoenix.
IIAJC NATIONAL FINALS: Ryan Hybl of Colbert, Ga., and Candie Kung of Fountain Valley, Calif., won Thursday's boys and girls championships respectively at the 30th annual Independent Insurance Agent Junior Classic National Finals at Edmond, Okla.
BYU's Todd Miller of Napa, Calif., tied for third at 285, nine shots back. Jake Ellison of Santa Clara, Utah, tied for sixth at 287; and Spanish Fork's Clay Bingham tied for 15th at 291.
In the girls' competition, Heber City's Carrie Summerhays was ninth at 309, 21 shots off Kung's winning 282 total.
AJGA BOISE JUNIOR CLASSIC: Bountiful's Garrett Clegg shot rounds of 71, 69 and 72 to finish in ninth place Friday with a 212 total at the American Junior Golf Association's Boise Junior Classic.
