Salt Lake County Commission candidate Mark Shurtleff has resigned from his position as deputy county attorney.
The GOP's nominee to run against Democrat Mike Reberg took an indefinite leave of absence from his position earlier this summer, partially to distance himself from his controversial boss.County attorney Doug Short is becoming increasingly isolated in his combative views regarding how the county's legal business should be handled.
Despite Shurtleff's leave of absence, his opponents had continued to characterize him as cut from the same cloth as Short. Recently, for example, the Deseret News received an anonymous packet detailing Shurtleff's dealings in legal cases he handled for Short in the course of his employment.
Shurtleff finally decided to resign outright last Friday. "I needed to make the separation complete, so I'm not aligned to any person or group in the county," he said. "I'm running on me, and what I'm all about."
