An international development consultant and lifelong Murray resident was chosen as the newest member of the City Council Tuesday night.

In a 3-1 council vote, Richard V. Stauffer was selected to represent District 1, the northwest part of the city. He replaces Gary Ferrero, who stepped down July 14 to become the city's first judge in the Murray City Justice Court.Stauffer, 69, said he has strong ties to the city. "You can take me out of Murray, but you can't take the Murray out of me," he told the council.

He graduated from Murray High School in 1947 and received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the Uni-versity of Utah. Since then he has served as a consultant to Bechtel Corp., United Nations Development Program and International Development Planners.

In his work he prepares industrial development studies, regional development plans and urban planning and market research studies.

Stauffer has also been a lifelong leader in the Boy Scouts of America and worked with Cambodian refugees for five years in Oakland, Calif.

Ferrero had 17 months left in his term, which Stauffer will now fulfill. Two other candidates - Chad A. Soffe and Robert C. Bowden II - also sought the post.

The Council also approved a $93,517 compensation package for Ferrero in the next year as the city's first judge.
