Alcohol played a deadly part in an accident Saturday morning that killed a Springville man, police say.
Killed was:Rodney L. Blackburn, 26.
The vehicle Blackburn was driving went off the edge of the road after a curve. The car tumbled down the mountainside, ejecting Blackburn, who was not wearing a seat belt.
Passenger Jason Johnston, 28, also of Springville, was able to climb back up to the road to go for help. He hiked 14 miles to the Hobble Creek Golf Course before he could reach help around 9 a.m. He said he knocked on the doors of several residences without getting an answer and his cell phone would not pick up a signal in the canyon.
By the time police and emergency crews reached the car, Blackburn had died from internal injuries, said Utah County sheriff's detective Spencer Cannon.
Cannon said Johnston told police the two men were drinking heavily prior to the accident.
