Larry Silveira, a member of the PGA Tour from 1989 through 1992 and a regular member of the Nike Tour thereafter, leads a lengthy list of prominent touring professionals who will be competing in this year's $150,000 Utah Open Players Championship Aug. 18-23 at Willow Creek Country Club.
Silveira, who won the 1991 Deposit Guaranty Classic, has been playing a limited schedule on both tours in '97 and '98. He will join Joe Acosta Jr., Shane Bertsch, Brad Sutterfield, Todd Demsey, Chip Sullivan, Jeff Cook, Greg Cesario, E.J. Pfister, Rick Dalpos, Andy Dillard, Kevin Burton, Eric Johnson, and several former Utah Open champions as current or former PGA Tour travelers entered into the 162-player field.Former champions in the field include 1974 titlist Mike Malaska, 1981 winner Jimmy Blair, 1986 Clark Burroughs, 1987 winner Perry Arthur, 1990 winner Mark Carnevale, 1991 king Eric Hogg, 1995 winner J.B Sneve and defending champion Steven Runge. All former champions entered have played at least one fully exempt season on the PGA Tour, except Malaska, Hogg, Sneve, who have played in at least one U.S. Open championship.
Utahns are reminded that the entry deadline for the Utah Open is Monday. An 18-hole qualifying tournament for non-exempt players will be held Aug. 17 at Wing-pointe Golf Course to determine the final field for the 54-hole tournament.
