Lane Stilson, top, and another participant rappel down a training tower at Camp Williams during the Utah National Guard's annual Freedom Academy, held this week. Student leaders from 70 schools gathered at Camp Williams for the 37th annual event. "It's not our intent to recruit these young people as Guard members, but we do want to recruit them as patriots," said Lt. Col. Bryan Odekirk, academy director. In lectures and hands-on activities, delegates learned about freedoms Americans share and what it's like to live without them. They also sampled National Guard training routines, using a rappelling tower, static-line parachute drop and M-16 firing range. The week's events were underwritten by organizations and businesses around the state.
