Jon M. Huntsman Jr., vice chairman of Huntsman Corp. and former U.S. ambassador to Singapore, has been appointed Singapore's first honorary consul-general for Arizona, Colorado and Utah.

The appointment was announced by the government of the Republic of Singapore with agreement from the United States, according to a press release issued by the Singapore Embassy in Washington.With total trade amounting to $38 billion per year, Singapore is the ninth largest trading partner with the United States. Arizona, Colorado and Utah have also forged close ties with Singapore with exports amounting to $1.2 billion a year. Singapore is also host to more than 1,800 U.S. companies, including Iomega, Allied Signal, B.F. Goodrich, Honeywell, Cerprobe and Tech Group.

Huntsman, 38, serves on numerous corporate and nonprofit boards, including Fortune 500's Owens Corning Corp. and Valassis Communications. Before serving as U.S. ambassador to Singapore, he was deputy secretary of commerce. He is a member of the International Advisory Council of the Singapore Economic Development Board.

"U.S.-Singapore relations have long been a positive example of shared interests and values," Huntsman said. "Both countries' commitment to free trade and economic prosperity, coupled with a desire for regional security and economic stability throughout Asia, have made us the strongest of partners."
