Defending beach volleyball champions Karolyn Kirby and Liz Masakayan were eliminated, losing to top-ranked Brazilians Shelda Bede and Adriana Behar 15-9.

Bede and Behar ran off nine straight points largely for a 10-1 lead, then scored four of the last five points to wrap it up.Masakayan and Kirby's last chance to advance ended when Pauline Manser and Kerri Pottharst of Australia beat winless Kristine Drakich and Guylaine Dumont of Canada 15-8.

Also reaching the final four were Americans Holly McPeak and Lisa Arce, who beat Maike Friedrichsen and Danja Musch of Germany 15-11, and Italy's Laura Bruschini and Annamaria Solazzi.

BOXING: Cuban boxers split the first two gold-medal bouts. Light flyweight Maikro Romero beat Aleksan Nalbaniyan of Russia 10-5, before Timur Tulyakov of Uzbekistan beat world championship silver medalist Waldemar Font 15-14.

FIGURE SKATING: Todd Eldredge added a Goodwill Games gold to his collection of medals.

Eldredge completed his personal progression, clinching the men's singles with a brilliant free skate. He already had Goodwill bronze from 1990 and silver from 1994.

SWIMMING: A team of World All-Stars used six 1-2 sweeps in individual events to hand the U.S. men a 78-43 loss.

The Americans, who narrowly lost to Germany when they were defeated in the 400-meter freestyle relay - an event they've won at every Olympics - started OK against the World team by winning the 400 medley relay for a 7-0 lead. But the World team then went 1-2 in five of the next seven events for a 46-24 lead that the Americans never challenged.
