Stand-up comedy is not always clean, and comedy clubs often wear that fact as a badge of honor. But Laffs Comedy Cafe hosts a contest this weekend that requires "cleanliness."

It's the Rocky Mountain Laff-off, with contestants from New York to California competing for a $1,000 first-place prize. Many of the acts are seasoned veterans on the comedy circuit, such as South Dakota native Steve Gelder.Gelder, whose act is so clean he's done an interview with Kidville News, gained his first professional comedy experience as a morning radio show host. His humor lampoons everything from rental cars to foreign policy to Dylan Thomas. "A lot of comics say `the more you drink the funnier I get,' " Gelder said in a recent interview. "With me, the more you read, the funnier I get."

The contest, which makes stops in Idaho and Wyoming, will be in Ogden Friday-Sunday at 8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.
