A 34-year-old man trying to prevent his friend's car from being carjacked was slashed in the ear and stabbed in the back during an early morning struggle Monday.

Salt Lake police said the one of the carjacking suspects, a 17-year-old boy, was apprehended by an off-duty police officer who heard the description of the men sought in the incident and tracked him down.The car was taken at 1:26 a.m. at 922 S. 900 West, where the two assailants demanded a ride from the female victim. When she refused, they forcibly took her car. Her friend attempted to stop them. He was injured with a pocket knife but refused medical attention, police said.

The assailants then took off in the car and abandoned it several blocks away. Police are still looking for a 28-year-old man accused of the crime.
