Russell Edwin DeMond, age 54, died July 20, 1998, of kidney failure at the Holladay Healthcare Center, with his dedicated wife and loving daughter by his side. For 10 years he suffered bravely with medical problems too numerous to mention.
Russ was born in New Haven, Connecticut, October 27, 1943, to Frederick Russell and Alice Mae Phelps DeMond. He was baptized a member of the LDS Church April , 1963. Served a labor mission to the North West Area from 1964 to 1966. His entire family was baptized and they moved from Connecticut to the Avenues in Salt Lake City. Served a mission from 1966 to 1968 in the Florida Mission. On October 27, 1972 Russ married Diane Elaine Sherwood, of Tooele, Utah in the Salt Lake Temple. Russ worked for Deseret Press, Tenneco Chemicals/Cal Ink, Heinsohns/Heidelberg, Advo Systems, Inc. When he became seriously ill he was sales manager for Crescent Press. One of his hardest trials was not being able to work and provide for his family.Russ was a faithful member of the LDS Church and held positions in every auxiliary. He would attend the Jordan Temple every Tuesday and worked on the Prayer Roll every Friday. He typed hundreds of extractions on his computer.
Russ was a patient husband and a dedicated father. He loved sailing, Utah mountains, kept his many yards beautifully manicured and loved spending time with his children. He loved watching Star Trek and Kitty, the cat. But most of all he loved his computer provided by Keith Stuck.
Russ and Diane were blessed with three children: Russell Frederick, Salt Lake City; Ryan Glenn, Japan; and Lisa Diane, Salt Lake City. He is also survived by his father, Frederick Russell DeMond, Salt Lake City; brother, Bruce DeMond, Holladay; sister, Nancy (Mel) Martindale, AZ; daughter-in-law , Yuko DeMond, Japan, future daughter-in-law, Julene Emmons, Orem; sister-in-law, Betty McArthur DeMond, GA; mother and father-in-law Marjorie and Glenn (Skip) Sherwood, Tooele; brother-in-law, Rick (Becky) Sherwood; three nephews; two nieces and many relatives in Connecticut and Massachusetts. He was preceded in death by his mother, Alice Mae Phelps DeMond, September 1978.
Heartfelt thanks to Dr. Terry Robinson, Dr. Donald Doty, Dr. Douglas Lowry Smith, Dr. Steven Horton, Dr. Lee Burke, Dr. Steven Collins, Dr. Richard Cline and Associates, nurses and technicians at I.H.C. Central Dialysis, Simone Hennig, Peggy Williams at Vista Care, Holladay Healthcare Center staff and nurses and especially Travis, Martha and Tausoa who gave Russ comfort and care the last 10 hours of his life.
Funeral Services will be held Monday, July 27, 1998 at 12 noon at the Midvalley 2nd Ward Chapel, 1211 East 7800 South (across the street from Mitchell's Nursery). Friends may visit at 11 a.m., one hour before the funeral at the church. Interment will be at the Salt Lake City Cemetery under the direction of Jenkins Soffe Mortuary.
