Winnona Jane Walker Hammond, age 80, died July 17, 1998, from complications of a stroke. She was residing temporarily in Portland, Oregon at the time of her death.
Born October 30, 1917 in Farmington, Utah, to Hyrum and Romola Elliott Walker. Married Francis Harold Hammond, September 30, 1938. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Winnona was proud of her membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was an active member. She was a teacher in Primary and Relief Society and served in the presidency of the Primary for years. She was a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. Winnona loved genealogy work and spent many years gathering information on her family. She shared family records and histories with many people and strived to leave a legacy of accurate records for her posterity. She was a wonderful wife, mother, a beloved grandmother and great-grandmother. All who knew her were blessed by her example.She worked at the University of Utah as a cash flow clerk for several years, but was primarily a homemaker.
It was said of her, "She was as honest as they come". She loved to write poetry and kept a detailed journal of her life. She was an excellent cook, seamstress, and musician and she loved to travel to visit her family.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Dean (Linda) Sutton, Aloha, Oreqon; sons, Mark Hammond (Dorothy) and Glen Hammond, of Bountiful, Utah; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Richard (Glenda) Crebs, of Salt Lake City; and two brothers, Raymond Walker, of Santa Maria, California; and Brent Walker, of Paragonah, Utah. She was preceeded in death by her husband, Harold, in 1988, and a sister, Gay Swain in 1982.
Funeral services will be Monday, July 27, 1998 at 2 p.m. at Russon Brothers Mortuary at 295 No. Main in Bountiful. A viewing will be held at Russon Brothers on Sunday, July 26, from 6-8 p.m. and on Monday one hour prior to the services. Interment will be in the Farmington City Cemetery in Farmington, Utah.
