Richard Eberling, a convicted murderer who fought efforts to link him to the notorious killing of Dr. Sam Sheppard's wife, died at a prison hospital Saturday. He was 68.
Sheppard's son, Sam Reese Sheppard, has maintained that Eberling was the man who killed his mother in 1954 in a case that sent his father to prison and helped inspire the television series "The Fugitive."Eberling had a criminal record and had washed windows at the Sheppard's home in the Cleveland suburb of Bay Village.
Eberling was serving a life sentence since 1989 at the Orient Correctional Institution in central Ohio for the murder of a woman he had worked for as a caretaker.
