A panel of literary intellectuals has produced a list of the 100 best English-language novels published in this century. Ranked No. 1 is "Ulysses" by the Irish Shakespeare, James Joyce. Honk if you read it without Tylenol.
- It took Joyce years to get "Ulysses" published because the censors couldn't tell if it was a work of genius or a work of obscenity. Finally, they decided it was both - a dirty masterpiece.- If you lose your place while reading "Ulysses," it doesn't matter. I couldn't tell if I had read the first four chapters once or the first chapter four times.
