Weber State University will not conduct class during the 2002 Winter Games.

The semester will begin Jan. 2, 2002, and meet through Feb. 1, except on Human Rights Day. Spring break will be Feb. 2-26, to coincide with the Games schedule. Classes will resume Feb. 27 and continue through May 3, according to a calendar adopted recently by the WSU Board of Trustees."Having an Olympic venue on our campus will present a unique opportunity for WSU students, faculty and staff. For some, the Games represent a significant time for employment; for others, it's a chance to volunteer and attend events. We recognize the widespread interest and want to make sure everyone can be a part of it," said WSU President Paul H. Thomp-son.

"By starting classes earlier that year and ending later, we'll be able to provide an extended spring break during the Olympics without losing any instructional days."

"In addition to The Ice Sheet, it is likely that other WSU facilities and parking areas may by used for the Olympics. Pre-empting classes will help reduce traffic and parking problems caused by the influx of visitors," Thompson said.

Although classes will be recessed, period university offices will remain open for business during the three-week period.

The University of Utah also will dismiss classes during the Games. The U. student housing will be used as the Athletes Village during the event.
