President Mary Ellen Smoot, head of the General Relief Society of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was given the Exemplary Womanhood Award Thursday by the Brigham Young University student body.

President Smoot, who has lead the women's organization since April 1997, received the award from BYUSA representatives during a dinner in the Wilkinson Center."Sister Smoot truly embodies the attributes we look for when choosing someone to honor with this award," said Lorianne Updike, BYUSA public relations director. "Among all her accomplishments, she most importantly lives a life that points us toward more Christ-like service and living."

She and her husband, Stanley, have seven children and 44 grandchildren. President Smoot and her husband served with LDS Church Hosting from 1986 until her call as Relief Society president last year.
