Hot temperatures and extremely dry conditions over the past few weeks have prompted Salt Lake County fire officials to issue fireworks restrictions for several areas of the county.
Fireworks are banned east of Wasatch Boulevard and south and west of U-111, Salt Lake County Fire Capt. Bill Brass said. The department saw a 180 percent increase in fireworks-related incidents over the Fourth of July weekend, Brass said.
"The hot temperatures and dry conditions add up to a formula for some serious fires," Brass said. "We're not trying to be the Scrooges, we know people enjoy celebrating the holidays, but it boils down to us trying to save property."
This is the first fireworks ban the department has implemented this summer, Brass said. The areas included in the ban are at high risk in part because so many additional homes have been built in those areas, he said.
