A Utah man drowned Sunday afternoon when his kayak overturned on the Payette River.
Lucas Turner, 22, was kayaking with friends near Smith's Ferry when his kayak overturned and he struck his forehead and right temple. He was wearing both a helmet and a personal flotation device.Witnesses at the scene started CPR after pulling Turner from the water and continued until emergency response units arrived.
He was transported to Cascade Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Police Sergeant Darby Helms of the Valley County sheriff's Department is conducting an investigation.
Turner was an employee of the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance and was in charge of the recent re-inventory that identified 8.5 million acres of Bureau of Land Management lands for possible designation as wilderness.
