A van packed full of children crashed into a car in northeastern Pennsylvania Friday, killing two people and injuring 22 others, police said Saturday.

The van, designed to hold 15 passengers, had 24 occupants, about 20 of whom were children between 4 and 10, according to the Pennsylvania State Police at Swiftwater. The group was returning from an outing at an amusement park in Elysburg when the accident occurred at 5:25 p.m.

State police said the driver of the van fell asleep at the wheel and woke up too late to avoid a car that also was traveling eastbound, striking the rear end of the car, whose driver was not hurt.

One unidentified girl who was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital Center in Allentown later died, as did an unidentified person taken to Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg.
