Curt Byrum wasn't sure he'd ever see his name on top of a leader board again, even in the first round of a tournament usually skipped by golf's big guns, but he sank a 20-foot putt on his final hole for 7-under 63 and a stroke lead over four players Thursday in the first round of the Quad City Classic at Oakwood Country Club.
But in a round where short games made the difference, he rode a hot putter to the top.
Jack Nicklaus was one stroke behind co-leaders Hale Irwin and John Jacobs at the Senior Players Championship at Dearborne, Mich., after shooting 5-under-par 67 Thursday.
Vickie Odegard and Dana Dormann shot 7-under 64s to lead in the Jamie Farr Classic at Highland Meadows Golf Club.
At Glasgow, Scotland, Ross Drummond shot 5-under-par 66 Thursday for a second-round lead in the $1.4 million Loch Lomond tournament. The 41-year-old Scot gained a one-stroke lead over Lee Westwood and Australia's Stephen Allan with a 25-foot putt on the final hole for a 137 total.
