The Cache County Chamber of Commerce and the city of Logan are backing a relief drive this weekend for fire victims in Florida, but officials are cautious about the man who came up with the idea - Steve Bower.

Bower, who was a mayoral candidate in Logan last year, was convicted of felony theft about 10 years ago."This is not about me," Bower said. "This is about those people down there."

Francine Giani, director of the Utah Division of Consumer Protection, said the project is not yet registered as required by the state's Charitable Solicitations Act.

She also noted that the division in 1995 ordered Bower to stop charity collections related to the "Oklahoma Children's College Fund" in the wake of the Oklahoma City bombing. Giani urged caution when working with Bower.

Chamber President Jay Clark said the project is something that needs to be done.

He said a citizens committee is being formed to oversee the project.
