One of the great accomplishments of the Reagan administration, says Part II of Vanity Fair's series about Ronald and Nancy Reagan, is that they made it possible for presidents to socialize across party lines.

It all began with invitations to and from Katharine Graham of the Washington Post and expanded to include many Democratic members of the Georgetown social set.Liberal Democrat hostess Jennifer Phillips explained to the magazine:

"I just don't understand it, but Republicans are more fun - at least a kind of upper class Republicans. They're not guilt-ridden and they're not self-righteous. "
