A Salt Lake home under renovation proved troublesome for fire-fighters early Tuesdsay after it caught fire and shrouded the neighborhood with smoke.

Salt Lake Fire Capt. Devin Villa said most finished homes have structural supports covered in fire-resistant materials that slow a fire's progress. The home at 801 E. Simpson (2240 South) was being remodeled and flames spread quickly when it caught fire at 2:04 a.m.

The fire was confined to the rear of the house and to an upstairs apartment unit, with damage at $20,000, Villa said.

Investigators have not yet determined a cause.
