A woman accused of kidnapping her own heroin-addicted baby from University Hospital has been ordered to stand trial on the charge.

Christine J. Sowsonicut, 23, waived a preliminary hearing and pleaded not guilty to child kidnapping, a first-degree felony, last month. She is scheduled for a disposition hearing July 10 before 3rd District Judge Ronald Nehring.Sowsonicut was charged in October after allegedly abducting her 19-day-old daughter from the newborn infant care unit of the hospital. The state had taken custody of the 5-pound baby because doctors detected heroin in her system when she was born.

At her initial custody hearing, Sowsonicut admitted that she hid the baby under her coat and took her to a downtown motel. The baby suffered no serious medical setbacks because of the incident.

Third District Judge Michael Burton ordered a bench warrant for Sowsonicut's arrest when she failed to appear for her preliminary hearing in January. She is now at the Oxbow Jail.
