The Weber County Commission plans to purchase 35 acres near Defense Depot Ogden to build the county's new $25 million jail.

The county has held an option on the land since March. Last week, the commissioners paid the owner $200,000 to secure the $1,025,000 property. The contractor, Big D Construction Corp., is preparing plans for the 800-bed jail. Senior Vice President Rob Moore said the plans still have to be approved by the Ogden Planning Commission and that other preparation has to be finished before construction can start.

The earliest ground will be broken, he said, is Aug. 1. Moore said the jail probably won't be finished until fall 1999.

A $25 million bond to build the jail was passed by Weber County voters in November.

The new site stretches from 12th Street to 17th Street, between two railroad lines.
