Christy Smith scored her only two points on a driving shot in the lane with 20 seconds left to push the Charlotte Sting to a 68-66 victory over the Phoenix Mercury on Saturday.
The Eastern Conference-leading Sting (8-2) looked as if they would be blown out of their own building early in the game, as the Mercury took an 18-7 lead midway through the first half. The Sting, behind Andrea Stinson's 19 points, clawed back to 31-27 at the half.
Charlotte quickly took control of the game in the second half and maintained a slim lead until the closing minutes.
Umeki Webb scored six points down the stretch, twice putting Phoenix ahead by two. But Stinson, her former North Carolina State teammate, wouldn't let the Mercury get out of reach.
Stinson hit two jumpers in the final two minutes, setting up Smith's heroics.
