Residents of a northern Athens suburb direct water from a pipe to try to fight a wildfire spreading toward their home. Dozens of homes in Greece and Italy were burned and hundreds of people were forced to evacuate. Sudden strong winds, high temperatures and dry weather combined to produce the wildfires, which also forced the evacuation of patients from a Sicilian hospital. The heat was blamed for at least four deaths in Greece and seven in Italy. Two Greek soldiers were hospitalized after trying to move weapons away from a base near Athens. Weather forecasters predicted a slight drop in temperature but said that strong winds would continue throughout the weekend.
