Vickie Johnson and Sophia Witherspoon each scored 23 points as the New York Liberty remained unbeaten at home with a 71-68 victory over the Phoenix Mercury on Monday night.
Teresa Weatherspoon added seven points and 10 rebounds as the Liberty won their fourth straight and improved to 4-0 at home. The Mercury's three-game winning streak was snapped.Michelle Griffiths led Phoenix with 15 points.
SHOCK 60, STING 49: At Auburn Hills, Mich., Cindy Brown had 19 points and a team-record 16 rebounds, and Sandy Brondello added 19 points to lead the Detroit Shock over the Charlotte Sting.
After losing its first four games, Detroit has now won five straight. Charlotte saw its five-game winning streak end.
The Sting held Detroit's leading scorer, Korie Hlede, to four points on 1-for-12 shooting but couldn't stop Brondello and Brown. Razija Mujanovic added 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Shock, while Andrea Congreaves led Charlotte with 10.
COMETS 73, MYSTICS 48: At Houston, Cynthia Cooper scored 16 points and the Houston Comets held the Washington Mystics to 35 percent shooting.
The Comets (7-1) led 17-4 less than seven minutes into the game and were never threatened, leading by double digits the rest of the way while forcing 33 turnovers.
The 48 points by Washington matched the WNBA's season-low, set twice by the Sacramento Monarchs.
Alessandra de Santos scored 16 points for the Mystics (1-7), who missed 30 of 46 shots from the field.
ZHENG SIDELINED: Los Angeles Sparks center Haixia Zheng is scheduled to undergo surgery Wednesday to repair torn cartilage in her right knee.
The 6-foot-8 Zheng hurt her knee during the Sparks' 77-73 loss to Charlotte last week. She was averaging 7.5 points and 4.3 rebounds per game.
The team won't know how long she'll be sidelined until after the surgery.
Zheng, a four-time Chinese Olympian, will be the second Sparks player to undergo surgery this season. Rookie Allison Feaster had surgery to repair a broken bone in her foot June 19 and will be sidelined at least six weeks.
