A former Serb mayor implicated in a massacre of 200 people hanged himself in his jail cell while awaiting the verdict in his war crimes trial, the Yugoslav war crimes tribunal said Monday in The Hague Netherlands.

The body of Slavko Dokmanovic, 48, was found hanging on the hinge of the door to his cell in the U.N. court's detention unit in The Hague, tribunal spokesman Christian Chartier said.Although authorities considered the death a suicide, tribunal officials and Dutch police were conducting separate investigations, Chartier said. Any decisions on tightening security or making psychiatric evaluations of the 27 other people in custody will await the outcome of those probes, he said.

It was the first time a suspect being held in the tribunal's high-security cell block has committed suicide.
