Peter Wyden, an author and journalist who chronicled the Spanish Civil War, the Second World War bombing of Japan and other watershed 20th-century events, has died at the age of 74, one of his sons said Sunday.

He died Saturday night at Danbury Hospital in Danbury, Conn., after a stroke, Sen. Ron Wyden, an Oregon Democrat, said in a statement.Peter Wyden was the author of "Day One: Before Hiroshima and After," "The Bay of Pigs: The Untold Story," "Wall: The Inside Story of Divided Berlin," "The Passionate War: A Narrative History of the Spanish Civil War, 1936-1939" and "Stella: One Woman's True Tale of Evil, Betrayal and Survival in Hitler's Germany."
