For those who wish to become notaries, take note.

Under a new law, people seeking to become notaries will have to pass a written exam to demonstrate knowledge of the duties and responsibilities of the job.In the past, the application exam contained only true or false questions. The new test will allow applicants to explain their answers.

In addition to passing the exam, notaries must be 18 years and be a Utah resident for 30 days preceding their appointment. They must also secure a $5,000 bond and be able to write, read and understand English.

Applications may be denied based on criminal convictions or a prior revocations, suspension or restriction of notary appointment in any state.

Notary appointments are for a four-year period, after which an individual must reapply and retake the exam.
