Wendy Smith has formally requested a recount of Tuesday's Republican primary election in her race against incumbent Salt Lake County Commissioner Mary Callaghan.

Smith lost to Callaghan by a whisker - 153 votes out of 37,411 cast."In a general election, where the margin between candidates is so narrow, there would be no question that a recount should be done," she said. "Why should a primary election, with a margin of less than 1/2 percent, be any different?"

While a general election recount would pretty much be automatic, County Clerk Sherrie Swensen said a primary is different. Smith will have to allege fraud or error in each precinct to get a total recount.
