Incumbent Democrat Lois McArthur will square off against Republican contender Dennis Rockwell in November in the battle for her seat on the County Commission.

McArthur withstood a surprisingly strong challenge in Tuesday's primary from political newcomer Vicki Griffith, winning by a 167-vote margin. The incumbent, who served as Tooele County's deputy recorder for 20 years, collected 55 percent of the primary vote to fend off Griffith, a real estate broker who said she was running to let commissioners know many residents don't support their decisions.

Rockwell found easier going in the Republican primary, defeating Grantsville resident Brent "Husk" Crowther by a convincing 434-vote margin.

An educator, Rockwell captured 65 percent of the vote in a near-landslide over Crowther, a civil environmental engineer.

County Clerk Dennis Ewing said slightly more than 23 percent of Tooele County's 15,801 registered voters turned out for the primaries and a special election on a voted leeway for the Tooele County School District.
