Children on a Chinatown playground scrambled for cover when a teen-age gunman went on a shooting rampage, wounding six young men aged 13 to 18.
Police said the shooting in the heart of Chinatown, where more than a dozen bullet casings and bloody clothes littered the sidewalk, may have been gang-related.Five of the victims remained hospitalized today, one in critical condition.
The gunman opened fire just before 7 p.m. at the entrance of the Chinese Baptist Church playground, just a block from Chinatown's main thoroughfare.
The suspect, described as an Asian teen, fired as many as 16 shots from a semiautomatic handgun, then ran away down a crowded avenue. He remained at large Friday.
Witnesses said about 60 children were playing on the jungle gym and on adjacent tennis and volleyball courts at the time.
