John N. Krier, former Utahn and leading movie industry analyst whose box office reports were closely watched by Hollywood moguls and film fans, died Saturday at age 89.
Frequently quoted by the news media, Krier was owner and president of Exhibitor Relations Co. Inc., the nation's oldest box office tracking firm, established in 1974.Krier got into the theater business in the 1930s in the Midwest. After managing a growing chain of theaters, he was named vice president and general manager of Salt Lake City-based Intermountain Theatres in 1955. In 1978 he joined Exhibitor Relations, becoming president in 1982.
He came to Utah in 1937, first managing Intermountain's facilities in Logan. He later managed four theaters in Provo and two in Twin Falls, Idaho. In the mid-1960s he served two terms as president of the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce Advisory Council.
