Brigham Young Uni-ver-sity football player Jaron Dabney pleaded no contest Monday to stealing a $59 shirt from ZCMI in January.

Dabney, a sophomore kick-return specialist and running back, entered the plea before 4th District Judge John C. Backlund. He was charged in January with retail theft, a class B misdemeanor, after police cited him for taking the designer shirt from the University Mall store.Dabney previously had pleaded not guilty to the charge, and a trial was scheduled for Monday. Instead, he entered the plea and received a sentence from Backlund. The judge ordered Dabney, a native of Sealy, Texas, to pay a fine of $400.

Dabney's case was reviewed by BYU's Honor Code Office, which allowed the 1997 Western Athletic Conference freshman of the year to remain in school and continue playing football.
