Post's new Honey Nut Shredded Wheat is a bite-size cereal with honey and nuts baked in. The one-pound, four-ounce box was on sale at Smith's for $2.
Nihla Lake (married, two children at home): "Shredded wheat has evolved a lot from when we were youngsters. Back then, you just had the big old biscuit in your bowl and could add sliced bananas or strawberries and dump on sugar to make a swell breakfast. When you looked at the ingredients list, all it said was `100 percent whole wheat' and that was it. Life was simple then."Those biscuits are still around but there sure are a lot of spinoffs. This latest offering with the honey and chopped almond coating is pretty good, except we found them a little too hard and crunchy. We'll probably stick with Frosted Mini-Wheats."
Edyth Jensen (married, son, wife and one grandchild at home): "Shredded wheat has been a favorite of ours for years. I didn't much care for the honey nut flavor added to them, but the rest of the family thinks they are OK. `Try 'em, ya might like 'em.' "
Don Russell (married, five children at home): "This semi-sweetened cereal seemed to semi-please both the young and old alike at our house. Cold cereal eaters of all ages were mildly impressed with this offering. All of us enjoyed the bite-size shape. Whole wheat, sugar, ground almonds and honey form the basic foundation of this cereal."
Linda C. Tingey (single mother, one son at home): "I love regular shredded wheat, and this was kind of like dessert. I loved the sweet, crunchy Honey Nut Shredded Wheat. It has just enough sweetness and crunchiness. I only got one bowlful because my younger son finished off the rest. He said it was `yummy.' I'll buy this again."
Rich Firmage (married, four children, oldest 13 years old): "I used to eat the original large biscuits all the time, but never really liked the bite-size biscuits. I also don't like sweetened cereal much.
"But surprisingly, I liked this cereal. It has a sweet flavor but not a sugar-frosted flavor. I didn't taste any nut flavor at all, but who cares? This cereal was good."
Conclusion: Those original "big old biscuits" are still preferred by Shredded Wheat purists, but the new bit-size honey nut flavor is appealing, too - even as a snack (or maybe dessert).
