Five motorcyclists heading home from a bikers' gathering died Sunday in a pileup that closed a two-lane stretch of a major highway for several hours.

The unidentified bikers were heading south on U.S. 101 when a pickup in the northbound lane rear-ended a Jeep Cherokee and sent it into oncoming traffic near Willits, 125 miles north of San Francisco.Four motorcycles crashed into the Jeep. Four male bikers and a female passenger were killed. All were wearing helmets, the California Highway Patrol said.

Another biker was treated for moderate injuries and released.
