A lawyer who disappeared minutes before his court hearing last month still isn't around, but a judge has sentenced him to jail for unauthorized practicing of law.

Third District Court Judge Tyrone E. Medley called Don W. Hales "a danger and threat to the community" at a May 18 hearing, according to Katherine Fox, spokes-woman for the Utah State Bar.In December, the Utah State Bar obtained a permanent injunction against Hales ordering him to refrain from entering into attorney-client contingent funds; identifying himself through bank account documents, client correspondence and other means as a licensed attorney; and preparing legal settlements on behalf of clients.

But he continued his practice just days later, Fox said.

Medley imposed a 90-day jail sentence, a $3,000 fine, a $50,000 cash-only bail, and ordered Hales to pay legal fees and other court costs.
