Millard County's enthusiasm over improving a road to a popular tourist spot was dampened when the state turned down the county's application for a grant.
Road improvements between the Great Stone Face and the Gunnison Massacre Site southwest of Delta won't happen in the near future, say county commissioners. The county's request for a grant from the Division of Utah State History was recently denied.Commissioners wanted to use the money to improve the road leading to the two locations. Glen Swalberg, Millard County's economic development director, believes improving the road between the two sites would attract visitors.
He is trying to persuade county commissioner to use almost $8,000 in surplus tourism funds to begin the road project. Commissioners don't want to start a project they can't afford to finish and are not sure how they want to spend the surplus.
