Quarter-by-Quarter

1st quarter: Karl Malone starts the game all business once again. He scores six of Utah's first 12 points and 8 of their 16 in the quarter. Just one problem: Chicago's Toni Kukoc is having an out-of-body experience in which he thinks he's Michael Jordan. Kukoc accounts for 13 of the Bulls' 18 points in the period and outscores the genuine article by 10. Although the Jazz go up 14-8 on a Greg Foster layup with 5:01 to play, the Bulls hold the Jazz to a single bucket the rest of the way while roaring back to an 18-16 lead to end the stanza. Credit Utah with temporarily curing one ill - crashing the boards. The Jazz have a 14-11 rebound edge, including a 6-4 advantage on the offensive glass.

2nd quarter: You choose. Sloppy execution by the Jazz on offense or the smothering Bulls defense leads to nine Utah turnovers (14 in the half). The bottom line is another anemic (14 point) quarter and a 36-30 Jazz halftime deficit. Malone continues shouldering the scoring burden, but is starting to feel a little lonely. The Mailman scores six more in the quarter, but the only other Jazzman with multiple baskets is Shandon Anderson who checks in with four points in the quarter. Meanwhile, Jordan snaps out of his mini funk with 10 points to give him 13 for the half. Stat of the weird: Malone plays the entire first half without a single trip to the charity stripe.

3rd quarter: Jazz make their run and it's Malone playing like a superstar possessed. He scores 17 in the quarter, propelling Utah to a six-point lead at 58-52 with 1:08 remaining in the third. Kukoc, who continues to be near perfect on nine of 10 shooting from the field for the game, keeps the Bulls in contact with a crucial 3-pointer with 14 seconds left to cut the Jazz lead to 59-54. The Jazz finally find their way to the free throw line, hitting nine of 10 attempts, after going only two of four in the first half.

4th quarter: What was that stuff circulating in the United Center air? First Kukoc thinks his Jordan, now the Antoine Carr thinks he's Karl Malone. The Big Dawg, all but invisible in the first four games of the series, bites the Bulls for 8 points in the quarter and combines with Malone to push the Jazz to a 76-69 lead with 3:49 remaining. The Mailman continues his MVP delivery with 8 points of his own. Chicago counters with a still white-hot Kukoc down the stretch. Inside the final two minutes of the game, Kukoc drains a pair of 3-pointers and adds two of three free throws awarded on another 3-point try. He finishes the game with 30. Jordan, who scores 28, has a chance to win the game when he heaves a desperation 3-pointer with 0.3 seconds left, but the shot misses wide left.

Quotable

"We don't believe in quitting. Jerry Sloan is a hard-nosed guy. That's how we play. Now we have to go home and get another one."
