An East Timorese student wails in frustration after some of those students were evicted by Indonesian armed forces from the grounds of the foreign ministry in Jakarta, where they had gathered to protest. About 1,000 students attended the protest to demand a referendum on the status of the former Portuguese colony, which was annexed by Indonesia in 1975. Meanwhile in Dili, a dozen political prisoners pardoned by Indonesia's president raised fists as they left jail and vowed to renew pro-independence activities that had landed them there. They shouted separatist slogans. One man clutched a chicken.
