A property owner looking to collect rent checks discovered the body of a man, apparently the victim of a homicide, said Salt Lake Police Lt. Phil Kirk.

Police believe the man has been dead for several days. The owner of the complex, 225 S. 400 East, went to an apartment about 12:30 p.m. Monday. Smelling "a strong odor" emanating from the room, he entered the apartment. There, he found the body of an unidentified Caucasian man, about 40 years old, lying in "a large amount of blood," Kirk said.Police are unsure of the exact cause of death. But Kirk said given the amount of blood and the nature of the wounds, it appears to be a homicide. Police wouldn't indicate if the wounds were caused by a weapon.
