Quarter-by-quarter

1st quarter: Karl Malone makes his first four shots as the Jazz took an early edge. Utah's biggest lead of the game comes on a basket by Malone to make it 8-5. Michael Jordan struggles from the field, making just 3-of-8 attempts but still manages to reel off eight straight points as the Bulls force six lead changes in the final 7:08. Scottie Pippen makes three 3-pointers pacing Chicago to a 21-19 advantage by period's end.

2nd quarter: Pippen continues to have the hot hand by scoring Chicago's first seven points. The Bulls remain in front until they miss six straight shots and are held scoreless for 3:47. John Stockton's five points pace an 8-0 run as the Jazz take a 34-31 lead. Utah later falls into a drought of its own, however. The Jazz fail to make a basket, scoring only on free throws, in the closing 4:48 of the period. Jordan nets six of eight points as Chicago capitalizes to regain the lead.

3rd quarter: The Jazz break of string of seven straight periods without scoring at least 20 points against the Bulls. It isn't enough, though, for Utah to ever pull in front. Pippen and Jordan combine for 15 points as the Bulls lead by six on two occasions. Comeback efforts by the Jazz, who evened the score at 21-all on Malone's basket to open the period, are hampered by 11 missed shots and zero offensive rebounds.

4th quarter: Dennis Rodman's play on both ends of the floor proves to be the difference as the Bulls weather a late rally by the Jazz. His defense on Malone, who fails to score in the quarter until just 9.1 seconds remain, is complemented by four free throws in the final three minutes of the game. The first two come at 2:53, giving the Bulls the lead for good. Utah's hopes fade when he knocks down the others with 43.8 seconds to go to extend Chicago's lead to 81-77.

Quotable

"We were able to out-execute them down the stretch, and I thought that was the key to the game."
