Kirk Douglas' latest project took him to a spruced-up playground.

The actor and his wife, Anne, dedicated the 31st city school playground to be refurbished with money from a fund they established. Douglas chatted with students Tuesday at Sunland Elementary School in Los Angeles, which received $25,000 to repair its crumbling playground."The asphalt was cracking, the physical education apparatus was old and outdated and the matting was not up to code," said school spokesman Richard Chaffino.

Anne Douglas got the idea for the program after she read about deplorable conditions at city schools. The foundation's goal is to refurbish 400 playgrounds in the Los Angeles Uni-fied School District.
