Rebels attacked a technical training school in western Uganda, killing at least 60 students and abducting eight others, a newspaper reported Tuesday.

The independent Monitor newspaper said the attack occurred near the district headquarters of Kabarole, 195 miles west of the capital, Kampala.Rebels from the Allied Democratic Forces attacked Kicwamba Technical College on Monday, locked the students in dormitories and then set the buildings ablaze, the Monitor said.

The rebels wanted to bolster their manpower by forcing the students into their ranks, and set the fires after some students resisted, the newspaper said.

The rebels seek to oust President Yoweri Museveni, himself a former rebel leader. Some are members of former armies or groups defeated by Museveni's National Resistance Movement in 1986.
