Seven hundred sixty people have professed faith in Jesus Christ as a result of Southern Baptists' door-to-door work.Baptist representatives have made contacts on the streets and in homes as part of Crossover '98, the denomination's pre-convention tracting effort.
In addition, 18 local churches along the Wasatch Front hosted block parties in neighborhood parks, offering free food and entertainment.
As anticipated, few of the response cards came from members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and organizers acknowledged that "the primary evangelistic harvest was not among the Mormon faithful."
Final figures were expected to be higher, since many of the churches had not yet submitted their results, said Jack Smith, who is in charge of the Crossover follow-up.
Also as of Tuesday, the Southern Baptist Convention's mission headquarters in Alpharetta, Ga., had received 1,280 response cards from publications mailed to 400,000 Utah homes and 3,768 requests from the Salt Lake area in response to TV ads for a video on Jesus.
