Nora Ephron, who's directing "You've Got Mail," a Tom Hanks-Meg Ryan movie that deals with the conflict between independent bookstores and chains, told Publishers Weekly that the issue isn't simple.

"The truth is, I love my local Barnes & Noble," she said. "I find it sad that no one who works in it can answer a question, but the theme-parking of the American bookstore is not entirely a bad thing. When you go to the children's section of Barnes & Noble and you can't find a patch of floor space that doesn't have a kid on it, there's no way you can say those bookstores are bad for the book business."
