Gorgeous, the oldest female gorilla of known record and the equivalent of a 97-year-old human, will celebrate her 49th birthday today at Hogle Zoo.

Visitors may sign a large birthday card and sing "Happy Birthday" to the Western lowland gorilla at 1 p.m. in the Great Apes Building.Gorgeous will receive a birthday cake made of crushed pineapple, carrots, raisins, pears, cherry tomatoes and nonfat dairy whip.

In 1990, Gorgeous became the first gorilla to have cataract surgery. University of Utah Medical Center physicians restored the eyesight in her left eye by implanting an intraocular lens.

Soon afterward, Gorgeous was introduced to "N'jina, a black cat, that provided enrichment and companionship. The two are on display daily at the zoo.
