The Justice Department awarded a $2 million grant Thursday to Utah to help with security planning and public safety for the 2002 Winter Games.

"This federal funding will enable state, local and federal security and safety planners to make significant strides in achieving a unified, coordinated plan to provide security," said Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, who announced the grant. He said it will help hire full-time planning staff; send law enforcement officials to selected special events to observe security efforts there; and purchase equipment.
